CROSSOVER CAR CONVERSIONS - FIRST RAW
On the 27th August 2002, Crossover Car Conversions gained its Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme (RAWS) Approval, the first company to do so. This was recognised by the Department of Transport, with a formal visit including Members of Parliament, Staff from DoTaRs, Niddrie Nameplates, VICAA, Australian Customs and the press. The visit was also the scene for the fitment of the first used import plate.
WHAT IS A RAW?
On the 8th May 2000, the Motor Vehicle Standards Act was reviewed and amended, one of the changes involved the phasing out of the Low Volume Scheme (which the vast majority of vehicle importers operate under) and the introduction of RAWS, a certification scheme for low volume importers of vehicles.
There are new requirements set down for RAWS, the major ones being certification to ISO 9001:2000 quality management systems, and rules set out to prevent the importation of damaged vehicles.
All companies certified as a RAW, will have to come under close scrutiny, and only those meeting all the requirements will be issued with the approval.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
From the customers point of view, the finished product will appear to be much the same as what is currently being supplied to the market. The improvements will be found in the reliability of the vehicle, confidence that the vehicle complies with the stringent safety standards set out in the Australian Design Rules (ADR), and that it has no major accident history hidden beneath the body panels.
